Lying to the East Sea and situated at the middle of China's coastline and south flank of the developed Yangtze River Delta, Ningbo is called Yong for short, which consists of 2 counties of Xiangshan and Ninghai, 3 prefectural cities of Yuyao, Cixi and Fenghua and 6 districts of Haishu, Jiangdong, Jiangbei, Zhenhai, Beilun and Yinzhou. It covers 9365 sq.km. with a population of 5.49million.

As a famous harbour city, Ningbo is a scheming independent city, which enjoys provincial economic management purview, and a "National biggish city" as well, which has the power of constituting local rules and laws.

Ningbo Port is a venerable port with a long history of foreign trade. She is one of the three big ports for foreign trade in Tang and Song Dynasties, and one of the five trade ports after Opium War. Ningbo Port is one of the senior international deep-water ports in China, with the cargo throughput ranking the second in mainland China and the ninth in the world respectively and the throughput of containers ranking the fifth and one of the first 30 respectively.

As an important economic central city in the south flank of the Yangtze River Delta and the base of heavy chemical industry, Ningbo is a very important industrial city in East China and also the economic center of Zhejiang Province. In the year of 2003, the city GDP is RMB176,990,000,000, ranking the sixth among the fifteen sub-provincial cities; the per person GDP exceeds US$3400; the general financial revenue is RMB32,500,000,000; industry increase value of 91.01 billion has been achieved; the total retail income from consumables is up to RMB52.15 billion; controllable income of urban residents is RMB14277 per person, which ranks the fourth in China; and net income of rural residents is RMB6221 per person, which ranks the second.

Ningbo is an important coastal open city and foreign trade port. In 2003, the total amount of export and import is US$18.79 billion, including US$12.06 billion of export and US$6.73 billion of import. The contracted application of foreign capitals of Ningbo is US$3.44 billion while the real application US$1.727 billion; and the consulted introduction of domestic investment is up to RMB12 billion while the real introduction RMB5.5 billion.
